Frequently Asked Questions

What does iOpen offer?

iOpen Tutoring offers in-person and online-based tutoring services for students who are serious about their English performance and/or getting into college. For online services, we offer lessons via Skype, Google Hangouts, or FaceTime, as well as complementary email and text message communication for needs that arise in between lessons. For in-person services, we will be offering in-home services in Norfolk County during the 2017-2018 school year.
What do I need for my first lesson?
Students will need minimal items for the first lesson, and every lesson afterward. Materials needed will be discussed upon initial consultation, but will only include basic materials needed to succeed: a notebook/school materials, a Skype account, and a Google Docs account (free with any gmail email account).

Don't worry about Skype's connection. Skype has vastly improved its connection performance in recent years, and 99% of lessons run smoothly.

Will I be satisfied if I work with you over Skype or FaceTime?
Although FaceTime or Skype tutoring may seem unfamiliar to you at first, Jacleen has found Skype to be the most efficient way to work with students, and most students agree (we have a Skype retention rate of over 95%, versus in-person). Skype lessons have been so efficient and effective that in-person lessons by iOpen Tutoring were discontinued for a while so that the demands of Skype Tutoring could be met.
Skype offers a variety of features that allows for effective communication and explanation of ideas, including a chat window that often times is more helpful for English students than traditional paper and pen. Moreover, Skype offers a shared screen feature which students can use for sharing e-books, essays, or other digitally written papers with the tutor.
Google Docs is always used during iOpen's lessons. With Google Docs, students are able to use a Microsoft Word-styled program in which documents can be directly shared with the tutor. Both the student and the tutor are able to collaboratively edit and write in this document, in live time. This allows for great efficiency in getting work done, as it eliminates the idea of a tutor looking over a student's shoulder at the computer during in-home tutoring sessions.
Many students prefer Skype lessons to in-home lessons as it eliminates the anxiety and preparation of having someone enter the home, as well as the need to be home at a certain time. If students are running late, they are able to call from the location they are at.
Did you know that 100% of iOpen's clients from 2016 who voluntary partook in a survey stated that Jacleen met their needs "very well" or "extremely well"? Read our testimonies from satisfied customers of Skype lessons here.
Do I have to commit for a certain period of time?
